Crime Prevention

The Mission of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit is to build a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and the Community, to empower Citizens through crime prevention education, and to promote an environment in which people act individually and collectively to prevent crime and make our community safer for the next generation.

 The Crime Prevention Division is under the supervision of Sgt. Chris Azelton, this is a proactive program that provides the public with information that helps identify and minimize the risks of becoming a crime victim. These programs teach citizens how to enhance security and safety for themselves and their neighbors

Additional Classes

The Crime Prevention Unit also offers classes on church and business security. In addition to organizing community watch programs where communities work as a team to observe activity in their neighborhood. The Crime Prevention Unit has programs for children and adults.

Sgt. Chris Azelton

A native of Mount Airy North Carolina. Chris graduated from Mount Airy High School and started his law enforcement career in 1992 as a Guilford County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Chris was accepted into the 91st Basic State Highway Patrol School in Garner North Carolina in 1993, graduating from NCSHP Basic School. He was stationed in Randolph County where he spent most of his career. As well as being stationed in Alamance County for 3 1/2 years before returning to Randolph County in 2019. Christopher retired from the Highway Patrol on November 1st, 2020. Joining the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in May of 2021, he is now assigned to the Crime Prevention Unit. Christopher is committed to serving the citizens of Davidson County. He will continue to assist in bringing programs that will reduce crime in our neighborhoods.

Cpl. James Kearney

James (“Jamie”) Kerney began his service to his community in 1993 as a volunteer Firefighter with Badin Lake Fire Department and then as a member of the Montgomery County Rescue Squad where he continues to serve today. His heart to serve his community led him to a career in law enforcement in 2001 with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, NC. James spent over 21 years with MCSO and during this time he worked in multiple areas including patrol, lake patrol, investigations, special operations, and served as a Detective, Sgt., Lt., and Captain. In 2022 James joined the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, where he is continuing his career and growth within the law enforcement profession. Since joining the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, he has been a member of the patrol division, T.R.A.C.E unit, assisted with Lake Patrol, and is currently assigned to the Crime Prevention division, lead Firearms Instructor, and is a member of the Sheriff Emergency Response Unit. James holds an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and has been a criminal justice/law enforcement instructor for over 18 years. He is a certified instructor in various topics including Firearms, Pistol optics, Patrol Rifle, Concealed Carry, Subject Control/Defensive Tactics, Field Training Officer, Taser, and Active Shooter response.
